WHAT IS...?
This game requires students to simply define and explain everyday objects and verbs.
To begin, I tell the students that I am an alien from another planet and I know very little English nor do I know what all these objects around me are.
For example: I hold up a pen and I ask one student
Teacher: "What is this?"
Student:"That is a pen".
Teacher: "What is a pen?"
Student: "A pen is used for writing."
Teacher: "What is writing?"
Student: "Writing is a way communicating with symbols."

This game can be done with any basically any everyday object and verb. Once the game is understood by the entire class, they can do it by themselves without interaction from the teacher. The game is excellent for primary school students or low level high school students. It forces the students to explain objects or actions, which is especially useful if they don't know a word and if they visit a English-speaking country or communicate with native-English speakers
